Innovation is Awesome!

Test-driving a Tesla Model S is definitely like taking a rocket ship into the future, except this rocket ship is disrupting an entire industry and turning it on its ear. How incredible is that?!

Hi everyone. Jason Bavington here from Midnight Illusions and today we’re in Kitchener, Ontario. We’re at the Communitech Hub, home to Google and all sorts of startup companies; all sorts of cool ventures happen here. And we just had the pleasure of driving in a Tesla Model S.

If you’ve never had a chance to check out Tesla before, got to their website at This is a premium, all-electric vehicle. It was built from the ground up to be entirely electric, and this thing just shines. We took it on the highway; you floor it and it takes off. There’s no drag. We’re in total awe of the car.

You have a 17-inch dashboard here, all glass; it’s like having two iPads strung together. All of your controls are there. The car is super smooth. There’s actually no engine in the front. There’s actually trunk space. Everything about the car just completely blows your mind.

What I was thinking about was how Tesla is very similar to Apple. You know, Apple will come out with a new product or they’ll refine an existing product like say an MP3 Player that they come out with or an iPod. And then they entirely change the way the entire industry approaches listening to music.

They came out with the iPad and then the iPhone, which actually this recording is being filmed on. And, any time they come out with a new product, they take an industry and they totally shift it in a completely different direction. And Tesla has done that as well, for the automobile industry. This is the first time since the 1920s that a car company has started out from scratch, from nothing, in the US. It’s a successful business model. There were a lot of naysayers at the beginning but here we are sitting in this gorgeous car. They have an SUV coming out, and they have a mainstream model called Model 3 coming out in a few years, which is pretty much the Tesla for everyone.

So, I just wanted to share that with you, and how you can go into an industry that you think is completely saturated, everything’s the same, nothing really changes; everything just tweaks now and then, and then someone comes seemingly out of nowhere and completely revolutionizes that. We see that done with apps all of the time. There’s over a million apps in the App Store and one day someone comes out with an app they wrote in their basement over the weekend and it gets millions and millions of downloads, everyone loves it because it’s just plain fun. It’s exciting; it’s different. That’s what this car is that’s what Apple’s all about, and that’s what you can be all about in your apps too. It’s to figure out that formula of what makes something different.

What makes it super fun, which is an extremely important element, and what makes it exciting? In this case, this car, you can’t help but smile at it. You can’t help but enjoy it. Apple products are like that. There're other industries; the same thing happens. So, I encourage you to as they say, think different. There’s always something different out there; there’s always something new you can do. There’s always new ideas, plenty of opportunities.

That’s all I have for you today. I’m just going to sit in this car for two more minutes before they kick me out, and then we’ll be heading back to the office. Take care guys, leave your comments below, and talk to you soon. Bye.
